Get to ECNU

Departure from Hongqiao Airport to Zhongbei Campus

  • Subway: Line 2 to Zhongshan Park, and then transfer to Line 3/4 and get off at Jinshajiang Road Station or take Bus No.67 or No.765 to ECNU, which will cost about 6–20 RMB.
  • Taxi: It will cost about 50RMB for a 30-minute taxi drive from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport to ECNU.

Departure from Pudong International Airport to Zhongbei Campus

  • Subway: Line 2 to Zhongshan Park, and then transfer to Line 3/4 and get off at Jinshajiang Road Station or take Bus No.67 or No.765 to ECNU, which will cost about 9–25 RMB.

It is necessary to apply for a Chinese bank card. Alipay and WeChat need to be bound to a Chinese bank card in order to be used properly in China. Bank of China and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China have several branches near the school, so you can decide which one to apply for according to your needs.

  • Bank of China only accepts card applications from long-term international students whose study period is more than 6 months, while ICBC can accept card applications from international students whose study period is less than 6 months.

Student Insurance

From July 1st, 2017, according to the regulations made by the Chinese Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Public Safety, all international students in China are required to have comprehensive insurance based on national and school policies. For all international students’ comprehensive insurance, East China Normal University has the following requirements:

  • For all the international students whose study period is less than 6 months, you need to present to the ECNU international students office the approved insurance policy (the insurance coverage is higher than the coverage of the “Comprehensive Medical Insurance Policy for Foreigners Staying in China of Guo Ren Annuity Insurance,” referred to as “Guo Ren Insurance” below, and the insurance effective period should cover the study period). If the existing insurance doesn’t meet the requirement or you don’t have any insurance, you are required to purchase “Guo Ren Insurance” (400 Yuan/6 Months)
  • 2. For all the international students whose study period is more than 6 months, you need to present to the ECNU international students office the approved insurance policy (the insurance must be purchased from the insurance company in Mainland China; the insurance coverage is higher than the coverage of “Guo Ren Insurance” below, and the insurance effective period should cover the study period). If the existing insurance doesn’t meet the requirement or you don’t have insurance, you are required to purchase “Guo Ren Insurance” (400 Yuan for 6 months, 800 Yuan for a year)

Internship

According to the regulations of the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau, all international students studying in Shanghai who plan to participate in off-campus internships should add the internship information to their residence permit. Degree-program International students who apply for the off-campus internship should meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid student residence permit.
  • Obey Chinese law and university regulations, and don’t have any criminal records.
  • 2nd year or higher undergraduate or master’s, and the remaining residence period is longer than 3 months.
  • Pass all the courses in the last semester with good attendance.
  • The off-camp internship is within the program study plan.

Safety and Security

  • Shanghai is a subtropical monsoon-climate city with four distinct seasons. Generally, summer is relatively hot, winter is relatively humid and cold, and the weather changes frequently in spring and autumn. It is recommended that everyone pay attention to the weather changes, adjust their clothing and diet in a timely manner, adhere to a good lifestyle, and maintain a healthy body.
  • Shanghai is a very safe city, but it is still not recommended to go out alone or go to unfamiliar and remote areas at night. It is also recommended not to go to crowded places to prevent accidents.
  • It is recommended not to carry a large amount of cash or valuables with you when going out. Mobile payment is well established in China, so it’s advisable to use it more often.
  • When going out, please strictly abide by traffic regulations. If you need to purchase a motorcycle or electric vehicle, you must register at the police station and legally go on the road.
  • If taking a taxi, it is recommended to request a receipt from the driver and keep it. In case any item is lost in the car or you need to file a complaint, the receipt is an important piece of evidence.
  • When purchasing and using various household appliances, please pay attention to safety and cut off the power promptly after use. Never charge electric vehicles indoors or in hallways, as it can lead to fire hazards.
