About Eotvos Lorand University

The predecessor of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) was founded in the rural town of Nagyszombat (today Trnava, Slovakia) in 1635 by Cardinal Péter Pázmány as a Catholic university for teaching theology and philosophy. In 1770–1780, the university was transferred to Buda and later to Pest, and with the support of Maria Theresa, the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, it became the Royal Hungarian University.

Over the following decades, new faculties were established to meet the expectations of a learned society. In the second half of the 19th century, the university developed into a centre of modern higher education in today’s sense, covering nearly every scholarly field.

In 1950, the university was reorganized and adopted its present name. It was named after one of its professors, the world-famous physicist Loránd Eötvös. Recently, a new campus has been built on the scenic banks of the Danube. This campus, Lágymányos Campus, is now home to three faculties: the Faculty of Informatics, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Students’ Union

Not only the university but also the Students’ Union has a long tradition. The Union’s main duty is to represent Hungarian and international students at ELTE in different issues, such as study, allowance and remedy issues. As an international student, the student organization ESN ELTE will help you to get familiar with the Hungarian language and culture, the faculties, and the student life at ELTE. The Students’ Union has a two-tier structure: first, the students elect representatives directly from themselves, then the faculties delegate members from the representatives to the University Students’ Union (EHÖK). The University
Students’ Union coordinates the work of the Faculty Students’ Unions, represents students in the university government and the National Students’ Union, and organizes the student community life. The Students’ Union is an autonomous organization, which democratically elects the representatives and all in all the heart of the student’s fellowship.

Academic System

ELTE is internationally recognized, and its programs are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee. The diplomas issued by Eötvös Loránd University are acknowledged worldwide, and their course credits are transferable in all countries in the European Union.

Eötvös Loránd University, and Hungarian higher education in general, take part in the Bologna process. Accordingly, the consecutive training cycles of higher education leading to a higher education degree are the bachelor’s program (alapképzés), master’s program (mesterképzés), and doctoral program (doctor képzés). Bachelor’s and master’s courses are taught in consecutive cycles, in the form of divided training, or cases specified by law, in the form of undivided, one-tier training.

Language Courses

Eötvös Loránd University offers the English Foundation Course (General English) to international students. ELTE Origo Language Center, a company of Eötvös Loránd University, is the leading language assessment centre in Hungary, with an extensive network of accredited test centers offering certified examinations in approximately 30 languages at 62 locations all over Hungary.

Courses are available for different language skills and at different levels. The type and level of courses depend on the demand of applicants for the semester in question.

Degree Programs

Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) offers a wide range of degree programs to international students who intend to obtain a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree at ELTE and who want to complete the entire program in English at ELTE in Budapest, Hungary. The programs are in English. Courses for philology degree programs in foreign languages at the Faculty of Humanities are always offered in the given language. The language of instruction and the language requirements of a particular program are indicated in the description of the given program.

The degree programs are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee. Diplomas issued at ELTE are acknowledged worldwide and course credits are transferable in all countries of the European Union.

As a member of various consortia, ELTE also offers joint degree programs with other European universities. Students in a joint degree program complete their studies at ELTE in Budapest (at least one semester) and at other member universities in the consortium (at least one semester).
