About Tongji University
Tongji University is a leading university directly under the State Ministry of Education in China and is also included in the state-funded Project 211 and the 21st Century Education Rejuvenation Action Plan of China. The history of the university dates back to 1907 when Tongji German Medical School was founded by Erich Paulun, a German doctor in Shanghai. In 1923, it was officially established as a university, and in 1927, it was renamed National Tongji University. It then grew to be a comprehensive university offering programs in science, engineering, medicine, the arts, and law. In 1952, after the discipline reorganization, Tongji University became the largest and most complete university with strength in engineering, especially in Chinese civil engineering. In 1978, following the Reform and Opening-up Policy in China, Tongji quickly developed into a multi-disciplinary university with strength in engineering. Today, with a history spanning more than 100 years, Tongji has grown into a comprehensive research-oriented university that offers ten major disciplines: sciences, engineering, medicine, literature, arts, law, economics, management, philosophy, and pedagogy.
Tongji attaches importance to internationalization and has cooperated with Germany, France, the UK, the USA, Japan, Canada, Italy, Spain, and Finland in the fields of education, technology, and economics. Several international joint programs have been established between the university and its counterparts in other countries, such as the Sino-German College for Graduate Study and Sino-German College of Applied Sciences, which are sponsored by the Chinese and German governments; the Sino-Italian Campus, which is sponsored by the Chinese and Italian governments; the Sino-French Institute of Engineering and Management cooperated with Paris Tech in France, Tongji-UNEP Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development cooperated with UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and Tongji-Australian Institute of Technology.

Apartment Regulations
The International Student Service Centers are located on three campuses of Tongji University independently. They are all facilitated with telephone sets, toilets, showers, air conditioning, public kitchens, classrooms, and business services such as duplication, fax and e-mail sending, typing, and air-ticket and train ticket booking.

Visa/Residence Permit Procedures
- International students who are going to study in China should prepare an admission letter, a yellow sheet of JW201 or JW202 form, a medical report, and other documents, and apply for an entry visa for X1 (long-term study) or X2 (short-term study) at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in the student’s home country.
- To apply for a residence permit in China after entry, international students must get back the admission letter, yellow sheet of the JW201 or JW202 form, and other documents after applying for entry visa from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate.
- Visa-free is not permissible for international students.
- International students should go to the local police station to apply for the Registration Form of Temporary Residence within 24 hours after entering China.
- International students who live off campus should get a Record of Living Off Campus for Tongji International Students from the International Student Office and register with it at the local police station.
- International students who live on campus should get the Registration Form of Temporary Residence (on campus) at the reception of the international students’ dormitory buildings.

The duration of a master’s (2–3) year and a Ph.D. (3–4) year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Non-Chinese Nationality and Good Health:
- Applicants must be of non-Chinese nationality.
- Applicants should be in good health.
- International Student Status:
- Only individuals who are not citizens of China or have not graduated from Chinese universities are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
