About Ritsumeikan University

The private university, Ritsumeikan University, was established in 1900 in Kyoto, Japan. The title of best private university belongs to this university. About 35,000 students, both domestic and international, attend the university. Ritsumeikan University was placed in the QS World Rankings’ 801–1000th category. Of the six Japanese universities listed in the QS World University Rankings, JustRitsumeikan University was the only private institution in western Japan.

The school spirit of liberalism and internationalism advocated by Prince Saionji was combined with the ideals of academic freedom and vivacity pursued by Kojuro Nakagawa and became a tradition of the university. This tradition also survived the intense suppression of the prewar days, as evidenced by the fact that Ritsumeikan University accepted seventeen professors who were forced by the government to leave Kyoto Imperial University for their pacifist activities.

After World War II, Ritsumeikan adopted the educational philosophy of peace and democracy, faithful to the spirit of the Japanese Constitution and the Education Fundamental Law. In 1948, Ritsumeikan became one of the first Japanese universities to be reorganized under the new education system. Ritsumeikan carried out extensive reforms to ensure the democratic administration of the university and better serve society as an educational institution open to the public.

Introduction To MEXT Scholarships

The Japanese government offers a comprehensive “full-ride” scholarship called the MEXT University Recommendation Scholarship. As indicated by the name, an applicant must be recommended by a Japanese university to MEXT, or as it’s formally known, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology of Japan (known as the “Monbukagakusho” in Japanese), to be considered for the scholarship.

Candidates must follow the steps outlined below to apply for admission to Ritsumeikan University and be recommended for this scholarship. Each applicant who passes these admissions also receives a university recommendation for the scholarship. The maximum number of applicants allowed to pass these admissions equals the number of scholarship recommendations allocated to the university by MEXT. Since recommendation slots are limited, this means that only a handful of applicants receive a Letter of Acceptance via these admission procedures.

Student Support

• Kinugasa (Kyoto): Kinugasa Campus has three international student dormitories for new students. (Only for students who have no experience living in Japan.). Information about the dormitory is available in English and Japanese.
• Biwako-Kusatsu Campus (Shiga): Biwako-Kusatsu Campus has an international student dormitory located immediately adjacent to the campus. Information about the dormitory is available in English and Japanese.

Housing Guarantor System

Choosing an apartment is a very important step when starting your life as an international student. Generally, when you sign an apartment rental contract in Japan, a co-signer is required. When a co-signer is not available, you must use the services of a guarantor company. Scholarship Coverage

• The Ritsumeikan University MEXT Scholarship Program in Japan 2024 is a fully funded scholarship from the University of Ritsumeikan, Kyoto, Japan. The MEXT will pay all costs to study abroad in Japan to obtain this youth opportunity.
• Students are exempt from paying tuition fees during the scholarship period. 
• MEXT Tuition Scholarship: 143,000–145,000 JPY 
• At the beginning and end of the program, Economy Class Air Travel Tickets to/from Japan 
• An economy-class ticket from the international airport closest to their university (Kansai International Airport) to the international airport closest to their home will be given to students leaving Japan during the month after finishing their scholarship-sponsored studies.

Application Procedures and Forms

All prospective applicants must download number one, the Application Guidelines and Application Form, as well as number two, the Field of Study and Research Plan template, from the links below. Number three, the Letter of Reference Template, is an optional template that you may use when requesting your dean, etc., to write you a letter of reference. To be clear, the submission of a letter of reference is mandatory, but there is no set format for the letter. That said, using this optional template should ensure that the submitted letter meets the minimum criteria for acceptance.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, an applicant must:

• Have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with the Japanese government. Applicants who have Japanese nationality are not eligible (Japanese dual-nationality citizens who plan on renouncing their Japanese citizenship, however, may apply).
• Have been born on or after April 2, 1989.
• Be in both good physical and mental health.
• Be willing to acquire a student visa and enter Japan for study upon receipt of the scholarship.
• Be able to arrive in Japan on a date designated by Ritsumeikan University in the middle of September 2024.
• You do not need to calculate this on your own. The university will calculate your GPA according to MEXT’s formula after receiving your formal application.

The state number of credits and the year or period of credit acquisition must be stated for each course taken. *This should include or be followed by a straightforward description of all potential levels used in grade assessment, i.e. A, B, C, D, Fail, etc.

• Formal and official certificate of graduation or future graduation or completion of the programme or expected completion of the programme from the most recent university or college attended (Undergraduate or Graduate degree program)
• (Optional) Records (e.g., GPA, grades and criteria, individual rank order) from the most recent institution that demonstrate exceptional academic accomplishment with a high success predictor
• If you haven’t written a thesis, your abstract should be a succinct synopsis—no more than two pages—of your most recent published article, graduation project, term paper, etc.
• A copy of a passport page containing the name and date of birth of the claimant or a copy of the family registry or certificate of residence.
