There are Utrecht University buildings at various locations in and around the city of Utrecht, including two university libraries. The three main locations are Utrecht Science Park, International Campus Utrecht and Utrecht city centre.

In Utrecht, there is a severe shortage of and strong demand for student housing. Consider this carefully before deciding to attend university in Utrecht; as a student, you are responsible for arranging your own housing. Please be aware that we highly advise you to reconsider your decision to enroll if you haven’t arranged housing by the start of the academic year.

Utrecht Science Park

Utrecht Science Park is the home of most Utrecht University courses. The campus is located in the east, just outside the city, and is a short tram or bus ride from the city center. Many students live on campus in accommodations including the colorful Casa Confetti building. While studying at UU, you can play sports at the Olympos sports center, visit the Spar convenience store for groceries, have a drink at one of the restaurants, and get your study materials at the various specialist shops.

Famous architects created the university buildings to represent the character of the university and the city. The university and student housing are close to the UMC Utrecht Teaching Hospital, HU University of Applied Sciences, Hogeschool Utrecht, and the Botanic Gardens. Due to the relocation of numerous significant firms’ offices over the past few years, Utrecht Science Park is constantly expanding. Who knows, maybe in a few years you’ll find a cool internship chance there!

Utrecht City Centre

Student Review

Thomas

I am Thomas, and with my broad interests, I feel completely at home in Earth Sciences. Thanks to courses on earthquakes, volcanoes, mineralogy, evolution, water quality, and much more, I am never bored. Next year, I am going to take the educational module and hopefully obtain my qualifications to become a geography teacher. Besides that, I enjoy hiking, gaming, cooking, origami, and expanding my collection of stones.

I am a well-traveled person. When I was 12, I moved with my family from Rotterdam to sunny Aruba. I lived there for 4.5 years and after finishing elementary school we migrated back to the Netherlands. Then we ended up in the beautiful city of Utrecht and I feel very much at home here.

The aim of selective admission to graduate programs at Utrecht University is to ensure an optimal match between your abilities and aspirations and the Utrecht University learning environment. Utrecht University is committed to promoting excellence, and equality of opportunity and to furthering the diversity of its student body.

On Which Basis Does Utrecht University Select?

The primary consideration is whether you will be able to complete the program in the time allotted. Prior academic achievement is a strong indicator used to make that determination. The program will decide which specific academic achievements with proven relevance for the assessment of your suitability for the degree program will be considered. These may include your GPA/grades, standardized test scores, proofs of proficiency, samples of work in the relevant subject area(s), relevant skills, and proficiency in the language of instruction. All master’s programs use at least two qualitative selection criteria. The admission requirements are clearly and transparently stated on the application page and in the education and examination regulations, so that you are aware in advance of the requirements you must meet to be admitted to the program.

Are all Master’s Degree Programs Equally Selective?

No. Some master’s degree programs have taken the policy further than others. This is due in part to the fact that some master’s degree programs attract many more potential students than there are places available. The Executive Board may establish a fixed quota for admissions to certain master’s programs.

Admission Process

  • Familiarise yourself with the subject matter of the program (review the curriculum and course descriptions and explore future employment opportunities).
