The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several different areas, such as endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.
At the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, the Research Group in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease carries out research related to diagnoses, treatment and organization of care in COPD patients. The current research group conducts several studies i.e. in rehabilitation, healthcare digitalization, register research, sleep, etc.
The COPD-Center at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, was founded in 2015 and became clinically operative in the spring of 2016, with the aim to strengthen the COPD care and related research within Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Region Västra Götaland. There was and is an urgent call for better person-centered management of this chronic and progressive disease, a disease that affects a significant part of the society. The COPD-center at Sahlgrenska University Hospital provides specialist interdisciplinary open care for patients with severe COPD, aiming to improve patient related outcomes, reduce health care utilizations an improve coordination between home and community. The COPD center in the hospital concentrates on the daily clinical care of patients and the current research project is fully related to the improvement of patient care. The COPD-Center focusses on novel patient-centered and multi- and interdisciplinary treatment of patients with COPD with a large focus on digitalization and implementing new tools for patient-centered care, home-monitoring and home-based rehabilitation. The goal is to further develop the interdisciplinary, patient-centered care for COPD patients and provide academic excellence and build up the COPD-related research program. Within this context, we developed the Care4COPD project, which is a pragmatic observational study that has the goal to evaluate the effect of interprofessional person-centered care with digitalized care plans. This study will compare this new way of COPD-management at the COPD center in Gothenburg with usual care as registered in the Swedish National Airway Register. The goal is to develop a prospective cohort of well characterized COPD patients that is available for further research on improvement of diagnosis and management in COPD, as well as to perform research on COPD-related quality registers to identify risk factors for COPD and opportunities for improved treatment.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is defined by persistent airflow limitation in subjects with chronic respiratory symptoms attributed to prolonged exposure to risk factors, mainly tobacco smoke. COPD affects approximately 200 million people worldwide and is the fourth-leading cause of death. The prevalence of COPD in Sweden is approximately 8% and the annual estimated cost for society is 9.1 billion SEK. It is a considered a complex and heterogeneous disease that contains multiple phenotypes and is entangled in a spectrum of multimorbidity. In addition, patients suffer from exacerbations, which are unpredictable and might be severe.
Job assignments
The work will include leading the CARE4COPD study and related projects, which will include collection of data, supervising of research nurses, data analysis and writing of clinical research protocols and reports. Part of the job will be based on studying register data mainly the Swedish National Airway Register to evaluate current guidelines in Sweden and identify opportunities for improved COPD treatment. The work tasks include all parts of research, such as research planning and conduct data analysis, manuscript writing, etc. The work will be performed together with the project managers, scientist and PhD students in a multidisciplinary research group and network consisting of international researchers.
Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.
Assessment
Eligible to be employed as a postdoctor is a person who has completed a doctoral degree within pulmonology with a solid knowledge within the COPD subject and related research fields. The work will include research within COPD, Covid-19 and epidemiology based on register research. The candidate should have documented track record in clinical research, data collection, study management and writing and publishing of scientific research. Experience in statistical data analysis is desirable. The candidate should have successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies. Good knowledge of English, written and spoken is required. The candidate must be organizational, meticulous, responsible and able to work both independently and in groups. The successful candidate is expected to be highly motivated, capable to plan and execute research independently and to actively contribute scientifically to the group. These skills should be reflected in publication records as well as with research grants as main applicant. We value good communication ability, presentation skills, curiosity and scientific integrity. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
