The Hesse Lab is headquartered in the Botanical Garden of the University of Freiburg and is part of Professor Thomas Speck’s Plant Biomechanics Group, providing an attractive working environment for research in functional morphology, biomechanics and bionics in plants.
- Support and complement the research of the group in the research areas of functional morphology, static/dynamic imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, and biomechanics of monocotyledons.
- Scientific qualification (PhD) in the subject area “MRI based analysis of functional morphology of monocotyledons”. In addition to classical histological analysis methods, modern 3D imaging techniques such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging will be used.
- Completed master’s or graduate degree in biology.
- Knowledge of botany (anatomy/morphology, analysis methods) and data analysis. Specific knowledge in biomechanics and 3D imaging is not mandatory but helpful.
- Fluency in written and spoken English. German language skills are helpful, but can also be acquired on site.

The position is initially limited to 3 years. It is a part-time position (65%) within the framework of a DFG-funded research project.
The salary will be determined in accordance with TV-L E13.
